A Letter from our Lead Pastor
Downtown Cornerstone,
There is no doubt these are dark and difficult times. Conflict lurks around every corner, at home and abroad. Yet, even so, I’m not a declinist. I’m a gospel optimist—and I hope you are too. Our God specializes at working in the darkness of a world under the siege of sin (2 Cor. 12:9-10). You can read more about that in our year-end update, 2021 Review: The Light Shines in the Darkness.
Amidst all that 2021 was, we thought it would be helpful to create a digital annual report to recount tangible displays of Jesus’ mercy among us and to remember what the Lord has done (Dt. 7:18; Ps. 77:11; Ps. 105:5).
Of course, as I often point out, the final fruit of our prayers and labors is not entirely quantifiable. The most important fruit of God’s work is often unmeasurable.
After all, who can measure increased joy in the Lord, or how many persevered through trials, or how many said “no” to a multitude of destructive temptations, or how many hearts were re-captured by the love of God, or how many re-structured their calendar and finances to place God first, or how many saw obedience turn from duty to delight, or how many seeds of the gospel were sown that will bear fruit in our city for generations to come in ways we’d never imagine.
God is at work among us in ways seen and, more often, unseen.
Yet, other fruit is more easily seen and measured. Fruit that is seen is no less spiritual nor miraculous, so it’s fitting to give glory to God for it (1 Cor. 10:31). Some of this fruit-that-can-be-seen is recounted here for our encouragement and God’s praise:

God is our refuge and strength (Ps. 46:1). He is an inexhaustible fountain of life (Ps. 36:9). He is a God of glory, grace, and truth (Jn. 1:14). In him, and in him alone, do our hearts find the rest and meaning they long for (Jn. 10:10; Ps. 16:11). May he keep us on fire for his supremacy in all things in the year to come (Col. 1:16-17). Let’s lean on who he is and all that he is for us, in Jesus (1 Cor. 3:21-22). His promises are true and they cannot fail (Titus 1:2). He alone is worthy of our days and dollars (Rev. 5:12). What a privilege we have in being part of the greatest cause on earth, together, in our beloved city. His story is still unfolding and we’re a part of it.
Together, let’s ask Him to do what only He can in 2022 (Eph. 3:20-21)!
Christ is all,
Pastor Adam
Year at a glance
* These numbers don’t include the countless coffees shared, counseling times, and discipleship moments had over the past year.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Evidences of Grace
MILESTONES
We celebrated our tenth birthday as a church!
Salvations
We witnessed many friends put their trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We also rejoiced in 6 stories of God’s grace through baptism!
PREACHING
We began the year with our annual New Year Essentials sermon series, continued our study in Romans, and launched our One Another’ing series.
Leadership
We relaunched our quarterly Leadership Lab for ministry leads in our body. We installed two deacons, with many more in development. We also transitioned two deacons who faithfully served for years.
Membership
We welcomed 45 new members! We (sadly) said goodbye to 117 members, the majority of whom moved.
Discipleship
Over 300 people attended one or more of 21 midweek classes this last year. We also established the second round of our yearly class calendar.
Additionally, over 200 people attended training events we hosted on topics including missions, mercy, biblical care, ethnic harmony, and leadership in ministry.
Communities
Over 300 people participated in a Cornerstone Community. As the year progressed, our communities returned to primarily meeting in person while abiding by Covid health guidelines.
MISSIONS & Church Planting
We invested nearly $250,000 this year in supporting church-planting efforts around the globe. This includes supporting two DCC member households serving in Chad and SE Asia, 13 west coast church planters, and church planting efforts in Tokyo, Turkey, and Brazil (where we helped fund and train nearly 30 church plants/planters through Restore Brazil and the Planter Project).
Covid Response
We continued to navigate various Covid-19 gathering restrictions and health guidelines. By God’s grace, we did not experience an outbreak.
We transitioned back to two in-person Sunday gatherings in March, gathered at the WSCC on Good Friday & Easter to worship our risen King as one body, phased out our public livestream in July when Washington state officially “reopened”—and celebrated our annual summer picnic in person again!
We also moved our meetings and events back to in-person—including member meetings, prayer nights, newcomers’ coffee, class sessions, training events, and numerous pastoral sessions.
FINANCES
By God’s grace, due to year end giving, we met and exceeded our $2.2M budgeted goal for our general fund in our 2020-2021 fiscal year. Additionally, because of strong end-of-year giving, we were able to set aside another $150,000 dollars towards the renovation of our new building!
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

PREACHING
GOD IS GLORIFIED WHEN THE DEPTH OF HIS RICHES, WISDOM, AND KNOWLEDGE, IN JESUS, IS EXPOUNDED FROM HIS WORD—LEADING TO NEW HEARTS, RENEWED MINDS, AND FAITH-FILLED LIVES.
As part of our 2021 New Year Essentials series, we considered the significance of preaching and how best to receive God’s preached Word, the immense value of every human life, how fear separates us especially when it comes to racial reconciliation, and God’s unfolding story among the nations through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In 2021, we continued our multi-year study in Romans (which began in the fall of 2019). Last year, we walked through chapters nine through fifteen, covering issues such as God’s sovereign choice in salvation, the subtle danger of self-righteousness, the nature of faith, God’s design for human history, and the practical implications of Jesus’ gospel in the every day lives of his people. What a feast!
In One Another’ing, our parallel sermon series for 2021, we looked at 13 gospel-empowered, “one another” commandments given to Jesus’ people. Taken together, they reflect the relational culture that is to mark Jesus’ people in a local place and witness to the watching world the new humanity God is redeeming in Him.
Onward
Continuing the work on our future gospel outpost

A permanent home in the heart of our city is another step towards fulfilling our vision of becoming a faithful gospel presence for, Lord willing, generations to come.
As many of you know, by God’s grace and kindness and after years of praying, we bought a building in Belltown in December 2020. Jesus has been incredibly faithful to us. Although the project costs increased substantially in light of the pandemic and inflation, and resulted in our Onward campaign goal increase from $2.5M to $3.5M—we were able to raise up over $2.7M through the faithful giving of our members and supporters in 2021. We also made considerable progress on design, demolition, and permitting amidst the challenges of yet another pandemic year. As we work towards starting construction, we continue to trust our Father’s good timing and provision.
Making
Disciples

The heart of Jesus’ commission to his church is to make disciples. The term disciple refers to being a student, a follower, or a learner. Being a disciple of Jesus is the lifelong process of learning to trust and become more like Him in every sphere of life—and help others do the same.
Amidst what was another challenging year, we took a number of significant steps towards resetting and returning to our pre-pandemic discipleship rhythms. Below is a quick snapshot:
We relaunched a number of our serving teams as a way to tangibly love another as we returned to in-person gatherings, and to welcome and support those new with us.
We restarted Cornerstone Kids gatherings as a way to continue partnering with parents to joyfully teach, show, and model who Jesus is to the children.
We continued to offer classes during our Spring (virtual) and Fall (in-person) quarters.
We returned to in-person discipleship across our Cornerstone Communities, discipleship groups, Cornerstone Connects, Prayer Nights—and started a monthly Ye Olde Fellowship Hour.
We continued to train and equip our body via mercy meetups and focus groups to serve God’s vulnerable image-bearers around us.
We continued engaging topics of ethnic harmony in sermons, forums, and conversations—aiming to think biblically, grow in Christlikeness, and build up the church.
We continued making progress in biblical care for those facing difficulties, through training, pastoral care, and peer counseling and support.

Taking the Gospel To the Nations

God has given his people, the church, the mission of making and maturing disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:18-20). Disciples are made through the preaching of the gospel (Rom. 10:14-15) and are brought to maturity by engaging in the life of the church (Eph. 4:11-16).
Acts 29 Partners
Acts 29 is a diverse, global family of church-planting churches. We supported and helped over 50 church plants via Acts 29 US West—as well as other churches near and far, including Puyallup, Alaska, Brazil, Japan, and Turkey. Click here to learn more about each of them.
DCC Global Partners
We also equip and support our own members as our global partners in their efforts to reach the nations.
CHAD
G is currently pursuing the next phase of language and culture learning as she and her team continue to work towards translating the bible and establishing a church among the Makanese people.
SE Asia
J&H are excited to finally be in Southeast Asia and start their long church planting journey after a challenging year of waiting and anticipation.

2022: Looking Forward
As we kick off the new year, our mission and focus remain the same. We want to see as many people as possible meet Jesus and experience life as it was intended to be, in Him.
By God’s grace, these are a handful of God-fueled goals we are praying for this next year:
Complete our new building as our future home base for gospel ministry, maturation, and multiplication.
Prayerfully plan excellent, edifying, theologically-rich, worship-filled, and missional Sunday gatherings.
Nurture our relational unity (not uniformity) in Jesus, amidst a highly divisive season.
Continue to nurture a culture of discipleship, where every member is equipped and growing.
Grow as relational evangelists while developing our missions pipeline to reach the unreached.
Love our city to life through tangible, sacrificial, and mercy-filled service.
Place a priority on developing leaders (service leads, community leads, staff, deacons, elders, etc.)
DCC, let’s continue to pray, that in 2022, our lives would be marked by a sincere and pure devotion to Jesus and that more people would get to taste and see that the Lord is good (Ps. 34:8).
“From coming to know and trust Jesus, to being baptized together, to growing and learning our gifting, we truly would not be the people or Christians we are without DCC.”
“Our hearts have been drawn closer to Jesus through faithful gospel-centered preaching and in fellowship with many of you who have now become dear and forever friends.”
“You welcomed me in like family on the first day, taught me how to rest in Christ more fully and be more comfortable talking about the gospel with loved ones.”
“DCC is the place where I accepted Jesus into my life, where God drew me into his kingdom.”
“I’m forever grateful God led me to DCC, where his Spirit is at work that I came to know Jesus.”
“At DCC, I’ve begun rebuilding a strong Christian foundation. I continue to be challenged, inspired, and awakened by the Bible-centered sermons, studies, and all of you—my community. ”
“We treasure our time living alongside brothers and sisters at DCC. What a life-giving community to have been part of!”
“I still choke up thinking about the sermon on the conversion of Saul where I heard the truth about Jesus and my heart jumped to attention.”
“DCC will always hold a special place in our hearts where we came as two different persons from distinct backgrounds and God used it to help us build up each other in faith.”

It is our prayer that all who consider DCC their home church would be relationally connected, intentionally growing, meaningfully serving, faithfully giving, missionally engaged, willingly accountable, and known by a pastor.
“We exist to know Jesus, and to make Him known, for the glory of God and the joy of all people.”
